"Rain or Roast" Continues

The Bob Caples Memorial 3-Wall Tournament continued the "rain or roast" tradition again in 2006 . This year it was rain, as all of Saturday's matches had to be moved inside to the Athletic Club @ Waycross.

Soon after the first matches got underway at the 3-wall courts, rain began. A look at the day's forecast and the local radar by weatherman David Kent was convincing enough to move the matches inside.

Players made the adjustment to 4-wall and an entire day of matches was played inside.

Steve Kiser made a surprise appearance, coming all the way in from Florida to complain about the draw, even though he wasn't in the tournament. Steve paid his GCHA dues so that he could become a member of the "hip resurfacing subcult" of the "GHCA subcult" of the cult of handball players, a distinction shared with George Lehocky and Tony Cianciolo.

Saturday's matches had George Lehocky taking the championship over Marion Kolstedt in the tournament's 60+ singles mini-division. Chris Giannamore won the B Singles and then went on to win the combined division by defeating C Singles champion Rick Garcia in a grueling match.

Sunday's weather was more cooperative. Although cloudy most of the day, the rain held off and the courts stayed dry for the finals. Good thing, since Saturday's rain had knocked down the tent.

First up in the morning was the B/C Doubles championship, pitting father and son team Dick and Rich Hafner against Rick Garcia (back again, after Saturday's marathon) and Will Mortimer. The first game could have gone either way, but Rick and Will managed a two-point win, and then went on to win the next game fairly easily.

The 50+ Doubles saw locals Bob Bardeau and Bob Lohmueller win in convincing fashion, defeating the Toledo team of Jim Lowe and George Miller. Bardeau then went on to beat Steve Kehoe for the 50's Singles crown, again in convincing fashion.

The Open Singles was all Toledo, as Phil Kirk defeated Tyler Stevens in two games. Phil and Tyler then teamed up to win the Open Doubles over Casey and Ray Mayo.
