CINCINNATI – Back by popular demand, a Juniors Division featured some spirited competition at the 2006 Queen City Handball Tournament. Playing two-bounce with a Big Blue, Nathan Gregg and Micha Garcia covered a lot of court during their match, and in the end, Micha ended up scoring a few more points to win the game. But all in the 'fans in the stands" agreed that both boys played championship caliber handball.

Later on, in the Open Singles final, Chicago’s Nikolai Nahorniak managed to upset the top seed, Kevin Hill (Indiana) 8-21, 21-5, 21-8. The two met again a short time later, and this time Kevin and partner Marty Clemens reigned, taking the championship in two games against Nikolai and partner Pat Lunn from Cincinnati.

The 60+ Singles final featured the return of two veteran players who haven't been in many handball tournaments lately. Bert Huether has played squash for the past five years, and this was his first time back on a court with a handball. Meanwhile, on the other side of the bracket, George Lehocky returned to tournament play after a lengthy recovery from hip resurfacing. Their final went to a tie-breaker, but in the end, George gutted it out and claimed victory, 21-17, 14-21, 11-9.

In the 40+ Singles, Cincinnati’s Bob Lohmueller repeated last year's Queen City performance, using consistent and steady play to defeat Marty Clemens (Indiana) in the finals of the Masters Singles, 21-14, 21-12.

The results of the 50+ Singles followed the seeding perfectly, and Dayton's Bob Bardeau took the championship with a tie-breaker victory over Cincinnati's Ron Rosselot.

The 50+ Doubles round robin quickly became a one-round final after a team dropped out at the last minute on Saturday morning. Perennial favorites Doug Blankemeyer and Denny Dupps had to play a tie-breaker against Ron Rosselot and Rich Seal, but managed to take the crown with an 11-2 score.

Jacinto Frias slammed in the B Divisions, beating Justin Baker in the singles final and then teaming with last year's Consolation winner Peter Vasquez (Oklahoma) to win the B Doubles. University of Cincinnati's favorite, Mark Schuette, pulled out a victory in the C Singles, besting Doug Cox. And newcomer Jonathan Carillo (Indiana) was the Consolation winner.

The tournament drew nearly 60 entrants and was held at the Athletic Club at Waycross the weekend of December 8-9. Special thanks to the 2006 Queen City Handball Tournament sponsors:

  • AmeriSuites
  • Jack Dean Construction (Jack Dean)
  • Kids First (Jeff Metzger)
  • Rosselot Financial Group (Ron Rosselot)

In addition to being a sponsor, Jack Dean was also the tournament director, with help from Greg Fite on the shirts, Jack Prather with the draw, Jim Krailler and David Kent with the tournament desk and George Lehocky in charge of merchandise sales. Thanks also go to Ralph Weil and Greg Fite, who helped organize both the consolation and juniors competitions, and to Paul and Beth Baker and the entire staff at the Athletic Club @ Waycross.
