some more sleep for Christmas

CINCINNATI – The Queen City Handball Tournament drew nearly 100 entrants who competed in 10 divisions at the Athletic Club at Waycross the weekend of December 9-11. Lured by $2,700 in prize money given in seven divisions, competitors represented 8 states.

In the Open Division, Chicago’s Suhn Lee, despite an initial scare from Carl Huether (Cincinnati), proved too much for the highly competitive division and bested Casey Mayo (Dayton) in the finals 8-21, 21-18, 11-6.

In the Open Doubles, it was Jim Corrigan (Cleveland) and Kevin Hill (Indianapolis) who claimed the championship over the much-younger team of Suhn Lee and his doubles partner Carlos Zamora (Chicago) 21-11, 21-8.

Cincinnati’s Bob Lohmueller lined his pockets with first place prize money by using his consistent and steady play to defeat Marty Clemens (Indiana) in the finals of the Masters Singles, 21-15, 21-8.

In the 50+ Singles it came down to the #1 Seed versus #2 Seed. When it was over Paul Baker (Cincinnati) had defeated Jeff Catron (Pennsylvania) 21-12, 21-9.

The 50+ Doubles saw the battle of the north and south in the finals. Cincinnati’s Jim Krailler and Willie Straw faced Toledo’s Don Revenaugh and Michigan’s Joe Ivy. Don and Joe showed why they earned the title champions of the 50+ Doubles as they won 21-11, 21-13.

Ralph Weil celebrated his 75th birthday at the tournament.

John Love (Cincinnati) and Jerry Gartside’s (Newark) match in the 60+ Singles finals was a marathon because they were so evenly matched but John gutted it out and claimed victory, 14-21, 21-17, 11-4.

Ralph Weil (Cincinnati) could do no wrong in the 70+ Singles Round Robin as he went undefeated.

Jay Catron won the exciting B Singles over Jacinto Frias (Oklahoma), 19-21, 21-14, 11-0. Look out Open Division.

Joe Gruden (Cleveland) had too much experience for Doug Cox (Cincinnati) in the finals of the C Division as he won in two, 21-6, 21-9.

In the B/C Doubles Ralph Weil teamed with Pat Lunn (Cincinnati) to defeat the up and coming teenage team of Jake Parker (Cincinnati) and Justin Lak (Cincinnati) in the finals, 21-3, 21-4.

Consolation winner Peter Vasquez (Oklahoma) won his first title, but it will not be his last.

Special thanks to all the 2005 Queen City Handball Tournament sponsors. Mark your calendar for December 8-10, 2006 – it’s only going to get better!
