Queen City
Shootout
2002

The Queen City Shootout tournament was held in Cincinnati, OH at the Camargo Courthouse on December 6th through 8th. And the big story this year was the turnout -- over 70 players participated in singles and doubles, bolstered by college teams from both Miami University in nearby Oxford, OH and the University of Kentucky team from Lexington. (The tournament moved from it's normal first-November-weekend slot to accommodate GCHA's Ireland Adventure. And it gave us a chance to use our prized Guinness flag as a photo background.)

Marty Clemens, from Indiana, had a busy and productive weekend. He won the combined Open/Masters Singles Division with a convincing win over Cincinnati's Paul Baker, who had gained a berth in the finals by upsetting Toledo's Phil Kirk in a tiebreaker. Marty also joined up with brother Tom in the Open/Masters Doubles, making it all the way to the final round, when they lost to Jim Wohl and Mark Heithoff, also from Indiana.

Sponsor Ron Rosselot slammed in the 50's Divisions, winning a round-robin doubles bracket with his partner, Bob Hiance; Ron also won the 50's Singles Championship in a serve-and-shoot exhibition against Finalist Jim Krailler. Greg Fite, from Cincinnati, a relative newcomer to the tournament scene, also saw a lot of playing time. In the end, he and partner Jack Dean took the B-Doubles Championship from Jim Ballinger and Chuck McOsker on Sunday morning. But Greg ran out of gas a short time later in the B-Singles Final, losing to Jim O'Brien from Washington Courthouse in two games.

For the most part, the C-players went both ways in singles and doubles, and most matches pitted players from UK against the players from Miami U. Two rounds of singles on Friday evening and lots of playing time in both divisions on Saturday gave the college students some valuable experience. Lexington's Dan Bartlett emerged as the C-Singles Champion, defeating Jason Headings. UK won the C-Doubles Division as Champions Josh Middleton and JD McLandrich defeated Miami's Doug Williams and Cooper McKinney in one 31-point game.
