Cincinnati's Queen City Shootout, 2004

James Bardwell continued to show evidence of his recovery from back surgery by defeating Toledo's Phil Kirk in two games of the Open Division. After winning the first game 21-20, Bardwell said of Kirk, "he came to play." James did manage to win the victory and avoid a tie-breaker by taking the second game 21-16.

This year's 2004 Queen City Shootout was held OH on December 3rd and 4th at Paul Baker's Athletic Club @ Waycross, in Cincinnati.

In other action, Indiana's Marty Clemens came close to slamming the the 40+ divisions by defeating Steve Kehoe in singles; but he and partner Jim Wohl later lost the combined Open/Masters Doubles to Cincinnatians John Allen and Don Parker.

Jim Krailler did manage a slam in the Golden Masters (50+) Division. Jim defeated local favorite Jack Dean in the singles, then went on with partner Will Straw to take the doubles title from Bob Hiance and Ron Rosselot, 21-20 and 21-5.

The college teams, from the University of Cincinnati, Miami University in nearby Oxford, OH and the University of Kentucky from Lexington, were a major presence at the tournament. Zach Arem, from UK via Rochester, New York, never lost a game on his way to a C Singles championship. The same was true for Miami's Josh Middleton and J.D. McLandrich as they took the C-Doubles crown.

In other singles action, John Love triumphantly returned to the tournament scene by outlasting Jerry Gartside for the 60+ Singles championship, and Scott Walker took the B-Singles, defeating Jonathan Kryer in convincing fashion in the finals.

The GCHA (Greater Cincinnati Handball Association) wishes to thank hosts Paul and Beth Baker and the staff of the Athletic Club @ Waycross for their hospitality, with special thanks to tournament directors Greg Fite and George Lehocky for a smoothly run weekend.

Special thanks to our sponsors for their generous support:
