Handball skills, experience plus endurance earned Pat Lunn and his partners Jerry Shaughnessy and Al Sicking the Winner’s Crown at the 2004 Mather Doubles Handicap Tournament played Saturday morning, March 27th at the Cincinnati Central Parkway YMCA.

Lunn went all the way – four games – with two partners, Jerry Shaughnessy (2 matches) and then Al Sicking (2 matches), who replaced Jerry.

Chris Lazarovski and Paul Smith celebrate being finalists

The regular format was for one game to be played to 31 points with each team given a handicap of plus or minus points. The final score of the championship game was 21-9. By mutual consent, the final teams played one game to 21 points in the final match. Paul Smith (age 70) and partner Chris Lazarovski were finalist runner-ups.

They beat the team of perennial champion, Bob Lohmueller, and Bob Goldcamp to get to the semi-finals. All games were close throughout the tournament thanks to Bob Lohmueller’s master handicapping of teams.

A drop down bracket allowed players to continue playing each other. No clear cut winning team emerged, but all players were winners.

Eleven doubles teams competed in the tournament which include 7 players from the national championship handball team of Miami University and their faculty advisor, Dr. Roger M. Knudson.
A special thanks to the Downtown YMCA Executive Director, Joel Aschendorf and his staff for again hosting this tournament. Kavin Crew and Louis Dunlop provided towels and cold drinks for the players.

No pain, no gain
Bottom line – the spirit of Pete Mather was felt because of the handball, sportsmanship, and camaraderie enjoyed by all on a Saturday morning at the Y. Just like Pete would have liked it. Look forward to “THE PETE” in 2005!
