President's Message

Hello, Handballers: Say good by to the Cicadas! Greet the summer months!!. Hopefully all of you have a good Cicada story or two to tell.

This miracle of nature didn’t stop the GCHA.

We broke last year’s record of GCHA membership thanks to Steve Kiser, who now resides in Florida. Thanks, Steve, and all the others who support GCHA in achieving this record. We completed a successful Caples Memorial three wall tournament in June. Thanks Jim Krailler and the GCHA Board for the work on getting it done. Thanks to the players who made it exciting. Thanks to Paul Baker for providing his club’s facilities when the rain fell. A special thanks for the Sponsors who stepped up with cash or donations in kind – Jack Dean, Mike Reilly, Tom Gilday, Glenn Laque, Bob Hiance and Carl Heuther. Mike was even a winner in one division and runner up in another. He partnered with some guys named Bob Lohmueller and Carl Heuther.

And there’s so much more to come………………..

  • Lots of tournaments to compete in
  • GCHA Day at Reds vs Cardinals on Tuesday July 27
  • Annual Golf Outing – Friday September 17th
  • Annual GCHA Meeting - October 11
  • Ireland II Handball Trip – Nov. 5 to Nov. 13
  • Queen City Shootout – December 3-5

I look forward to seeing you at these events. HAVE A GREAT SUMMER.

Best regards. George Lehocky, President – GCHA Board

Irish Handball Tour 2004

The sign-up deadline for the 2004 Irish Handball Tour is just around the corner. A deposit check of $300 per traveler is due to First Travel by Monday, July 26th.

This is a great trip for a great price, but we need at least 20 confirmed travelers by the deadline in order to lock in the arrangements. Family and friends are also invited, as there's plenty of sightseeing, shopping, Irish culture and Irish nightlife included in the tour. We'll also arrange handball outings throughout the week, playing at area courts with local players, including the truly unique opportunity to play on a 30'x60' court.

Separate pages are available with all of the details. If you need more information, feel free to contact any of the following:

  • Travel Specialist: Irene Trunick, 859-380-2138
  • GCHA President: George Lehocky, 513-231-0847
  • GCHA Webmaster: Jim Krailler, 513-631-5291

GCHA Breaks
Membership Record !!
by Jim Krailler

Driving 1,150 miles from Florida to hand deliver his dues, Steve Kiser pushed the GCHA 2004 membership role past last year's record. On Sunday, June 6th, Kiser made a suprise appearance at the 3-Wall courts and became the GCHA's 127th member.

The picture at right shows Steve receiving his hand-written, hand-delivered receipt from GCHA president George Lehocky.

Later in June, long-time Williams YMCA member and old friend Carl Topie joined up to push the number to 128.

USHA
Four-Wall Nationals

Congratulations to all who went to Portland, Oregon in June to compete in the USHA National Tournament. Jim Wohl had the best showing, making it to the semi-finals in the 40-B division before losing in a tie-breaker. Jack Prather and Ralph Weil also competed at the tournament.

Toledo "Under The Lights"
Tournament

Congratulations to Greg Fite on his C-Singles championship at a new tournament, Toledo's "Under the Lights" held at the Lucas County Recreation Center on Friday and Saturday, June 25th and 26th.

Another Cincinnati Legend Passes Away
by Bob Hiance

For all of us who started playing handball at the Fenwick Club back in the 50’s, 60’s and beyond, Dick Fraley, the Director of the club, was the definition of a true gentleman. As a teenager in the 60’s, I was introduced to our game by the principal of my high school who belonged and played at the Fenwick Club.

Kim Boardman Can Help You

Blood Donor Program Update:
Free Cholesterol Screening
by Bob Burkitt

Now when you donate blood as part of the GCHA community service blood program you can track your cholesterol level. A few days after you donate you can call an automated number and enter a code number received at the time of donation. Your cholesterol level will be reported to you in confidence. Just another reason to participate by donating at one of the eight Hoxworth regional blood centers in the Greater Cincinnati area.

The blood donor program, started in February of 2003 in memory of George “Red” Coleman, continues as a community service of the Greater Cincinnati Handball Association. Donations can be made at any of the eight centers located around the Tri-State Area. Follow the link to http://www.hoxworth.org for locations and hours, or call (513) 451-0910 to make an appointment. Additional donor information and FAQs are available on the Hoxworth site. When asked if you are donating for a group or an organization, mention the Greater Cincinnati Handball Association and give the donor code HDB for handball.

It is advisable to wait 24 hours following donation to resume playing handball.

Bob Caples Memorial
3-Wall Tournament

In an attempt to beat the mid-summer heat and humidity, Cincinnati's Bob Caples Memorial 3-Wall Tournament moved to June this year, held on Saturday and Sunday, June 12th and 13th.. And in spite of some Saturday afternoon rains, the tournament was completed on schedule, thanks to Paul Baker and everyone at the Fitness Club @ Waycross.

Casey Mayo slammed in the Open divisions, winning Open Singlesby beating John Allen in two games, and then teaming up with his dad, Ray, to take the Open Doubles championship over the Cincinnati team of Carl Huether and Mike Reilly. Reilly also made an appearance in A-Doubles, teaming up with Bob Lohmueller to win the title by defeating another father/son team, Rich and Chris Seal.

In the 50-Singles, Bob Bardeau took advantage of a Will Straw "bad day" by defeating him in two games. UC handball coach Glenn Gartland won the B-Singles crown by defeating Cleveland's Jim Flynn. And, even though it took an extra 10 days to complete, the A-Singles championship went to Paul Baker, who defeated Steve Kehoe in a tie-breaker. Complete brackets with final scores are available at www.gcha.org.

A special thanks to our sponsors for helping the GCHA (Greater Cincinnati Handball Association) put on a first-rate tournament.
