President's Message

Welcome to Spring, Handballers.

The Dominant Event
On April 7 – 10, 2005, the GCHA will partner with the USHA to conduct the 34th Annual USHA Masters Singles Invitational in Cincinnati at the Athletic Club at Waycross (Paul Baker’s Club). This is a history making event for the GCHA. The theme was a special invitation to “Journey to a Great Tourney”

At this point, 136 players have accepted the invitation and signed up to compete in Divisions ranging from age 35 to age 85. Players will come from all over the United States as well as Canada, Mexico and Ireland. Vern Roberts Jr., Executive Director of the USHA, will be at the tournament with his “home boys.” Tournament Director, Jack Prather, the Tournament Committee and the GCHA Board/Team have pulled together to create a memorable event. The budget for the tournament is approximately $15,000. The $65 entry fee will cover some of the costs and many GCHA members, sponsors and the Ohio Handball Hall of Fame members have stepped up to help fill the financial gap.

We still need help. If you haven’t contributed, please do so by sending your check to:
David Kent, GCHA Treasurer
8873 Cavalier Drive,
Cincinnati, OH 45231.
Thank you to all those who have supported the tournament financially. A list will be printed in the Tournament Brochure and posted on the website. There will be a banquet on Saturday night, April 9, 2005.

Membership Record Again!
More good news! Spring also finds us with a record breaking membership for the 3rd consecutive year. We went over 130 GCHA members in 2005. Thanks again for the support.

Other Events!
Other activities on the future schedule of events range from the 3-Wall League to the Reds game scheduled for Friday, June 17, 2005 versus the Atlanta Braves. Please go to www.gcha.org to view the entire schedule of events. Look forward to seeing you at the Masters Singles. You don’t want to miss it.

Best regards.
George Lehocky,
President – GCHA Board of Directors

Tournament and League Results

The 2005 State of Ohio Handball Championships were held at the Severance Athletic Club in Cleveland over the weekend of February 18th - 20th.

Congratulations to Jack Prather and Ron Rosselot on their victory in the 50+ Golden Masters division at the State tournament held in February. They defeated the Dayton duo of Bob Bardeau and Joe Hensler in the finals on Sunday morning. Complete results are available on the Team Cleveland site.

Gary Reese won this year's Court House Fitness Center's Winter Singles League.

Winners of the fall doubles league, held at the Athletic Club @ Waycross were Bob Lohmueller and Jack Dean, in the A-league, with the team of Richard Gregg and Bob Allen Jr. in the second-place spot. In the B-league, Roger Knudson and Dave Smile were the champions, followed by Tom Gilday and Ralph Weil. In the winter doubles leagues, Richard Gregg and Bob Allen Jr. won the A-league, while Roger Knudson and Dave Smile again finished first in the B-league. Paul Baker is planning and end-of-league party for Friday, April 15th; awards will be presented to the league champions, and extra food will be available for the players.

Congratulations to Zach Arem, from the University of Kentucky, who was awarded the USHA's John Sabo Scholarship during this year's National Collegiate Tournament, held in February in Minneapolis, MN. Complete results from the National Collegiates are available at the USHA site.

Speaking of the National Collegiate Tournament, the GCHA Board offers free GCHA memberships and makes regular contributions to TriState area college team, in order to support their activities and help promote handball. In response, the GCHA members recently received the following messages.

Thank you very much. Our whole team had an unforgettable experience up in Minneapolis. Your donation really went a long way in helping us get there. I will let the guys know about the free membership.

Thanks again for helping us out. I hope to see you soon.

Zach Arem
University of Kentucky Handball Club

On behalf of the Miami University Handball Club, I would like to extend my sincerest thanks for the $200 donation given to us by the Greater Cincinnati Handball Association. Over the past few years we've been welcomed at Waycross with open arms by all of the GCHA members, and we really appreciate that. The $200 is above and beyond what we would expect, and we thank you immensely for it.

It is the generous support from people like you that have helped fund our way to the Collegiate Nationals tournament, our biggest and most important tournament of the year. We just recently got back from this year's tournament in Minneapolis, where we placed 7th overall in the men's standings. The only teams that beat us were either Irish or long-established college programs, so we're very happy to be moving up the ranks. Next year's tournament will be in Texas, and we hope to see even more handballers and hope to finish in an even better position.

So again, thank you so much for your continued support for Miami handball, and we look forward to helping out with the Masters tournament in April. We'll see you then.

Sincerely,
Liam Donoghue

Upcoming Tournaments

There are a number of tournaments coming up this Spring.

First up, of course, is the 34th Annual USHA National Masters Singles, starting on Thursday, April 7th, with finals scheduled for Sunday, April 10th between 10:00 am and 11:30 am. The draw is posted on the USHA website, and daily results will also be available there. Even if you're not playing, this is a rare occasion to watch national-level competition right here in Cincinnati, so come by the Athletic Club @ Waycross (directions) and watch some great handball. Some of the final matches will be videotaped for later playback on Warner cable.

Next is the 11th Annual Cleveland Invitational, to be held in Mentor, Ohio over the weekend of Friday, May 20th through Sunday, May 22nd. Check out the details and fill out an entry form at their site.

This year's Bob Caples Memorial 3-Wall Tournament is scheduled for Veterans Park on June 25th and 26th. Tournament details will be posted on the website at a future date.

This year's USHA National Four-Wall Championships will be held at the downtown YMCA in Houston, Texas. Dates are Monday, June 13th through Sunday, June 19th. The USHA has a page with all the details, including an entry form, information about the tournament, host clubs, hotels and area tourist attractions.

The Smith Brothers

Paul and Pete Smith (twins) celebrated their 71st birthday in February 05. The GCHA took this opportunity to celebrate their achievement as well as recognize other senior level handballers in the community in honor the late/great Art Mahaffey. Between them, Paul and Pete represent over 100 years of handball and have the stories to prove it.

Fellow players/friends joined the Smith boys on Monday, February 21, 2005 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Washington Platform Restaurant.

The "boys" came down from their Mount Adams "sanctuary" to share their unique stories and malapropisms. Jerry Rouse also made a guest appearance, carrying his files of memorabilia from the days when he sparred daily with John Love's locker room postings.

A number of GCHA members are under the weather. Paul Smith is going in for a hip replacement in April. Glenn Laque goes in for two new knees, also in April. And, we recently received word that Jim Groom has been hospitalized. Speedy recovery and best of luck to all.
